Residence: When not touring or in Nashville recording, Patty and Emory spend most of their time at their home outside of Atlanta, GA. “This is my final home. I’ve told everybody I’m gonna live here, die here … and come back and haunt the place.”
Favorite color: Blue Hobby: gardening
First concert attended: When she was 5, Patty’s father took her to the Pollyanna Drive-In Theater in Pikeville to see Flatt & Scruggs perform on top of the concession stand at intermission
Musical influences: Dolly Parton, George Jones, Linda Ronstadt, Patsy Cline, Merle Haggard, Loretta Lynn
Favorite country song: George Jones’ “Sometimes You Just Can’t Win”
Early career: In her teens, Patty performed in a duet with her brother Roger. After a trip to Nashville in the early ‘70s, they found supportive friends in Porter Wagoner and Dolly Parton, and by the time Patty graduated high school, she and Roger had moved to Music City. They became the opening act for the Wilburn Brothers, who had scored hits in the ‘50s and ‘60s, but Patty’s early dreams were dashed when she was passed up for a contract with MCA Records and eventually deemed too young for a professional career by the Wilburns.
Second chance: Patty left Nashville only to return by 1985 for a second try at her dream. She delivered a demo tape of five songs to Tony Brown, head of MCA, who signed her to the label that summer.
